Fishing Report and Forecast - Week 1 of June 2012

by Ryan Gruenholz on 05/31/2012 - 01:10 am

Category: Fishing Report and Forecast

Hey everyone, and welcome back to this week’s report!  I hope everyone had a great Holiday weekend, and everyone stayed safe!  It is nice to take some time and honor those who protect our freedom.  I am so thankful for all of the brave service men and women in our country.  Thanks for all you sacrifice!  Here is my report and forecast for the upcoming weekend!

Offshore fishing this week has been decent this past week, but has been picking up each and every day.  There have been some really nice catches of Dolphin, with a few really nice Wahoo’s for this time of year mixed in.  The majority of this action has been on debris and large patches of weeds that have been hovering offshore.  We have really been lacking current this past week, and expect that to pick up a little for the coming weekend.  The Tuna fishing on the humps in the middle and upper keys has been getting better too.  It appears that things are really starting to shape up as we approach the moon.  The Tunas in the lower keys and Key West has been holding pretty solid, but those fish should be moving this way, or back into the Gulf before too much longer.  Not much on the Swordfishing front, as a few nicer one’s have been caught, but mostly fish on the smaller side.  The Humps are still holding good numbers of AJ’s, and a ton of sharks as well.  Let’s not forget about all those bottom dwellers we are driving over Dolphin fishing all day either!  The deep dropping has been opened back up, and man are we having a great time!  Blue line Tiles, Snowy Groupers, Yellow Edge Groupers, Vermillion Snappers and Yellow Eye Snappers have been filling the box, as we have been spending a little time each day on the way home from offshore!  What great table fare these guys make, and a lot of fun to boot!  We have been fishing mostly in the broken bottom in Islamorada to Key Largo, in ranges of 200’ to 800’, and it has been really productive!  Give it a shot on rod n’ reel and see how much fun it is!  You can catch them on electrics like most do, but it is challenging and fun on with the conventional method!

The wreck fishing and rock piles on the deep side of the reef have been absolutely outstanding!  What a mixed bag we have been pulling off of these structures!  Wednesday we caught a 37 pound Black Grouper on 30 pound test leader with a 5/0 light wire circle hook!  What a catch for such light tackle!  The wrecks and offshore rock piles have been loaded up with Groupers, Snappers, Kingfish, AJ’s, Almaco Jacks, Yellow Eye and Vermillion Snappers, and African Pompano!  What a mixed bag you will find on the right structure.  We have been using live Pilchards mostly, but pinfish will work as well as dead ballyhoo.  Just about anything you can make look natural including vertical jigs will work!  Give it a shot, and you will be surprised just how much fun it can be!
The reef has been extraordinary lately, as the BIG Yellowtails are chewing, and the Groupers and Snappers have been cooperating well right along with them.  Plenty of action on the reef, just find some good water with good current behind the boat and start chumming.  The water has been really clean lately, so try some 12 pound fluorocarbon, about a 4 foot piece with a small circle hook like a #6 or #8 and watch how much you can get away with!  Remember to hide the hook in the bait and drift it just like a piece of chum coming out of the bag!  It is a blast!
