Fishig Report and Forecast in Islamorada, Florida Keys - Week of August 13th

by Ryan Gruenholz on 08/16/2012 - 08:33 pm

Category: Fishing Report and Forecast

Hey everyone, and welcome back to this week’s report!  Offshore fishing in the Florida Keys is still holding on, with nice catches of Mahi in the middle and upper keys.  The boy’s down south have been struggling a bit, as the Gulfstream has been pushing the fish way offshore of the lower keys.  Some really nice gaffer sized fish in the upper parts, ranging from depths of 600-1200 feet of water, with good bird activity.  The humps are beginning to get a little better with the Blackfin Tunas as well, with some of the smaller size fish we were seeing earlier in the year growing up now, and are averaging 10 to 14 pounds.  A little further offshore, the Swordfishing is really heating up, as the fall bite is about to go off.  I am predicting the next 2 moons to be some of the best Swordfishing we have ever seen!  It has definitely been setting up this way with the size of fish that were caught earlier in the year, so keep reading and  I will post on some catch reports!

The wrecks off of the Florida Keys are filling up nicely these days, as good numbers of King Mackerel, a few Wahoo, Sharks, Jacks, and all of the usual bottom dwellers have been happily awaiting your bait.  Live bait has been the best, and on the anchor with a little chum (frozen and live) it has been exciting to say the least!  A ton of fun on the 8 and 10 pound test!

On the reef, the same report again.  The fishing doesn’t change much in this area until the first cool front comes in early winter.  Other than the Mangrove Snapper spawn that I have been speaking of the past couple weeks, things stay pretty much the same.  Nice Mangroves, especially the night bite around the moon gets pretty good!  The Yellowtail Snappers and groupers continue to bite, as the fish are nice “dinner” sized fish, but can be really finicky with the really warm water (86 degrees) that is on the reef.

Well, that is it for this week!  Remember, if you need a charter please feel free to give me a call at 305-803-1321, or stop by World Wide Sportsman’s Bayside Marina and check us out.  I will be glad to help you out with whatever you need.  If you are new to the sport and have checked out the magazine and forum, you can also check out www.Islamoradafishingsource.com for some in depth information on what charter boats we have in our area, and what kind of fishing we all do.  It is becoming a great resource and directory for people looking to fish in our area!
